St. Baldrick’s

May 25, 2018

Ocean City High School’s Key Club hosted St. Baldrick’s Day for the second year in a row to help children with childhood cancer. Over twenty-five students and teachers solicited sponsors to raise money and volunteered to donate their hair: seventeen shaved their heads completely while ten cut off eight inches. Some participants were bystanders at the event who decided to join in and donate as well.

Amy Kohl and the OCHS Color Guard put on a great performance at the fundraiser. Stylists from Fabiana Salon of Ocean City donated their time to shave and cut the participants’ hair.

The top student shavee was Caleb Gartner, who raised $1,110. Another student, Mike Torrence, raised over $540. Dan Weaver, a science teacher at OCHS, lead the teachers’ group by raising $350.

Overall, the event raised $2,591 for St. Baldrick’s! Additionally, the hair donated will be given to an organization that makes wigs for children with cancer.

Car Wash

April 28th

OCHS Key Club hosted another successful car wash. With 15 seniors graduating this year there is a lot of scholarship money going out and we need to make it up with for the big events we have coming up. During the car wash not only did everyone have a great time but we raised plenty of money for our graduating seniors and upcoming events!

Community Field Day

April 28th

The Key Club once again put on an amazing event promoting equality for all. The Best Buddies club teamed up with the key club to put together a day of fun for the community with the special education students at OCHS. It was a smashing success! There was a bouncy house for the kids to jump on. There was surreys to ride around the Intermediate school where the event took place. We have many games and obstacle courses setup to play. In addition, there was snacks and even a snow cone machine to satisfy after a long day of play. Everyone had a great time participating in the event and look forward to hosting it and having even more participants next year.

Community Food Bank of New Jersey Trip

April 10th

Our Key Club went on a field trip to the EHT Community Food Bank of New Jersey. We went with our Key Club’s future, the Ocean City Intermediate School kids, to show them how our Key Club does service. We helped by packaging the produce, canned and boxed food donations from all of the big donors of our local food bank: Sams Club, Big Lots, ACME, and Shoprite. Frank from Kiwanis, the Key Club’s parent sponsor, came to work with us to help our community. We honored to help the food bank out by donating our time and we look forward to going again.

Wesley Manor Senior Prom

March 9th, 2018

After months of preparation, excitement, and anticipation we had our Annual Ocean City High School Key Club-Wesley Manor Senior Prom! It was a smashing success. Our Tropical Tiki Tango was decorated better than any other prom with homemade decorations and paintings.  We had over 30 key club members there helping decorate and later breaking it down with the Seniors. After our week of poster making and decoration preparation we were highly satisfied. Although some of the seniors were unable to get up and dance with the rest of us we brought the party to them at their tables and were able to chat and play games to entertain all ages. In addition we limbo'd and hula hooped to conclude the night with a funny sight and some fun activity. Not only were the seniors we happy to have a great energetic night, our key clubbers had a great time learning dancing from the seniors' young age. We won't be giving up this event any time soon because it is a blast.

Foster Care Project

Febuary 28-March 2, 2018

While our Key Club was up at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia our tour guides had suggestions of how we can help out more in for them. They mentioned a particular event that would assist one of the forgotten about causes: their foster care program. CHOP has foster children come in the hospital periodically and when they arrive often times they have friends and siblings with them. Due to the hospitals loving policies they won’t turn down anyone from the hospital. In addition the hospital wants to send all the children home with something because they don’t always have as many nice amenities as we do at home.

Our drive raised items such as toys, clothes, books, activities, and arts and crafts for children in need. We raised around 1,000 items for the children! This success is thanks to our first, second, and third place teams. The 1st period classes collected items and were motivated by first and second place being awarded a pizza party. After Friday March 2nds collection, in third place was Mrs. Norton with 182 items, second was Mrs. Dill with 380 items, and Mr. Wheeldon’s period 1 class collected a whooping 456 items. We can not wait to give all the items to the children at the hospital. Thanks to everyone who collected!

The Amazing Race

March 1, 2018

The Amazing Race at Ocean CIty High School came back this 2018 year and our Key Club was not going to miss it. We had a great time learning about personal fitness and team bonding while having an amazing time. The event organizers had over 20 events in different rooms to participate in and finish in the least amount of time as possible. We compete from everything from brain teasers to bowling to obstacle courses. Our team had a great representation finishing among the first five teams! Although we may not have come home with the first place prize, we have bonded as club members and had a fun night. And who knows we’ll definitely be competitors next year!

OC's Got Talent

February 9, 2018

For another great year the OCHS key club had a great OC's Got Talent making it our 7th anual event! The event took place on Friday Febuary 9th and was a smashing success raising over $2,500 for the Children's Miracle Network of Philadelphia. The other money that we raised is split to fund our senior scholarships for the spring to come. Our show consisted of 16 amazing acts from exquisite piano songs to exceptional singers to tin foil flututes.

After the judges talked it was announced by MC's Matthew Catonoso and Korey Greene that the results were in. In 3rd place was Sarah Ruth who sng "I Dreamed a Dream" (from Les Miserables) as last years reigning winner. 2nd place was Ocean CIty's very own Winter Guard who spun their flags to the Incredibles Theme. Finally in first place was the amazing freshman Hannah Carr who sung beautifully for the audience. To conclude, the Tin Foil Flu Gang was a crowd favorite winning the People's Choice Award. The key club was beyond astounded by Ocean City High School's amazing talent!

The event ended up being a huge success raising above and beyond our goals. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and our seniors will greatly thrive in this sucess.

Head Start

December 20, 2017

Our Key Clubbers dedicated themselves to service this Christmas by annually raising gifts for the needy children in Ocean City. Ocean City High School Key Club paired up with the Head Start program to bring gifts to their 3-5 year old children in need. Every Key Club member brought in money or a gift for a child in need raising gifts for over 20 kids in need. The club raised over $1,000 worth of presents for the kids in need. Our club joined to wrap all the gathered presents and spread Christmas joy. And a few days later our officers and class representatives ventured off to the Head Start building to distribute the gifts to the children who were ecstatic to be receiving anything let alone the over ten presents! Our Key Clubbers are already looking forward to participating in the event again next year.

International Dinner

December 8, 2017

The International Dinner was an event sponsored by the Psychology Club where all of the school’s clubs get to bring in a dish to represent a different country of the world’s food. The event is organized so all the attendees get to eat as much food as they would like then learn about the food and the origins of the food in the chosen country. People attending the event get to eat and learn about the food they are eating. Key Club was able to bring in Caesar salad and talk of the Ancient Roman culture and establishment of the legendary dressing.

Chalk it Up!

November 27, 2017

On Monday the 27th, the Ocean City High School Key Club went to the Primary School to draw inspirational messages and uplifting pictures on the sidewalk in-front of the school. The children are going to see the drawings as they walk into school tomorrow and will put an unexpected smile on some children's faces. It was a huge success; and we have plans of doing it again next year. Our members are making a difference on smile at a time.

PB&J Drive

November 21, 2017

There's nothing the Ocean City Key Club loves more than Peanut Butter and Jelly Drives! We made exactly 548 sandwiches for those in need. After crafting all the PB&J sandwiches we had the supplies for we sent them off to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission who is always happy to accept our donations. All of the supplies were donated by our very own key clubbers who made the sandwiches! We love this event it's fast and easy yet still makes such a difference. You can expect that there will be many more sandwich drives coming up in the future!

Shoe Tying Lessons

November 15, 2017

Our Key Clubbers walked over to the Ocean City Primary School to continue the tradition of teaching the younger children how to tie their shoes. The high schoolers bonded with the kids as they were showing them how to make bunny ears and pull them through the loop for the first time. The kids receive a lace where they can practice on themselves. Many of our members remember learning to tie their shoes by past key clubbers and are enthusiastic about continuing the tradition. Some of the primary schoolers who are learning today could be leading with our club tomorrow.

CHOP Visitation

November 20, 2017

On Monday November 20th a small group of the most esteemed key club members visited The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Representatives from the hospital gave us a tour of the beautiful facility made up of 4 buildings! We learned where all the money that we raise during our OC’s Got Talent event goes toward. We experienced first hand what it is like to go through CHOP as a patient. In addition, we have been informed of more drives and fundraisers we can run in order help even more.

Kiwanis One Day Project
November 4, 2017

Our Kiwanis One Day project was going to our local food bank to help sort and organize food for the upcoming holidays. OUr members bonded with Kiwanis through helping them with Kiwanis One Day, an international day of community service. During the two hour long project, the Ocean City Key Club members worked in an assembly line sort countless meals for the needy. We addressed a very large need in the community, as about 14% are under the poverty line in NJ. We packaged holiday foods for the upcoming Thanksgiving. We plan to provide our assistance more with them in the future!

Hero Walk

October 29, 2017

The Hero Walk had a great turn out by the local community as well as the teams and clubs of Ocean City High School. The annual event took off at the Civic Center on 6th and Boardwalk to encourage all ages to not get in the car while intoxicated and to be a designated driver. To find more information on The Hero Campaign upcoming events and ways to donate click here.

St. Baldrick's Day

May 31, 2017.

After months of anticipation, St. Baldrick's took place on Wednesday, May 31st. Maddie Hunt from Student Council was the Lead Organzier, initially reaching out to St. Baldrick's last October and setting up the event. Key Club had tossed around the idea of a Locks of Love Drive and needless to say, the two clubs came together to collaborate and put on this truly incredible event. There can never be enough money raised to try and find a cure for childhood cancer.

John Bruno, OCHS Pshycology teacher, was a huge game changer when he announced that he would shave his head if he collected $300 in donations; not only did he meet his goal, he surpassed it with $730.62 collected making him the person with the most money raised.  Donations were flowing like waterfalls into the cup in front of him while he was getting shaved.  A few more teachers and administrators jumped on board: Dan Weaver, Amy Kohl, Chazz Dolinsky, Dr. Wendy O'Neal, Curt Nath, and Ashley Schmid.

Senior Rylee McDonnell raised the most of all the students with $510 in donations. Now that's a great way to end your senior year. She was so proud to send the money to St. Baldrick's. The team with the most money raised was Creative Writing with $200.

Natalia Chin kicked off the event and wasted no time by shaving her head at the start of Community Lunch. Students and teachers gathered in the gym to watch the show, while the Band and Colorguard helped rally the students as they performed around the Shavees. Before long, students weren't thinking twice about signing-up. Anyone that donated received a raffle ticket to win a bike from Annarelli's Bike Shop- Brad Altman was the lucky winner! He also received a month membership to Local Gym and a surf-lesson from 7th Street Surf Shop.

Abella Salon of Ocean City and Salon Kink of Linwood donated their time to shave and cut. All of the hair that was cut (a minimum of 8 inches) was sent to a non-profit wig-making organization in Michigan (thank you Amy Kohl for researching) called Children With Hair Loss. This organization was chosen because we felt that their mission correlated with our goal of making wigs that are free for children living with cancer, as well as accepted color-treated hair.

Wesley Manor Senior Prom

March 31, 2017.

Key Club put on their fifth annual Senior Prom at the United Methodist Communities at the Shores to end International Week of Service.  This year’s theme was “A Night in The City.”  A big thank you to Student Council for once again letting us use some of their decorations from Homecoming.

Key Club members danced the night away and made sure that everyone at the Senior Prom was able to walk away with a lasting memory and enjoyable evening. Though we didn’t have a band this year, Key Clubbers took turns singing and dancing to hit songs from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. The Seniors joined the Key Clubbers for songs such as “Crazy” by Patsy Kline and New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra.

When not dancing, Key Club members helped serve refreshments and were able to converse about previous dances and experiences that the residents at the Shores have had.  The night ended with the crowning of a Prom King and Queen, who happened to be husband and wife; they didn’t let go of each other’s hands except when his wife danced the conga. The 2016 Prom Queen attended and had a good time bobbing her to head to some of her favorite songs. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and look forward to next year.

OC's Got Talent

February 24, 2017

Our annual talent show benefited the Children's hospital of Philadelphia, and Senior Scholarships for Key Club. From ticket sales, refreshment sales, and donations, we were able to raise $4,400. As always, it's incredibly gratifying to receive the amount of support, donations, and encouragement that we received. Not only did our performers work incredibly hard on their acts, but the Key Club students, volunteer Tech Crew, and volunteer Stage Crew went above and beyond by working on every last detail to put this talent show together to benefit a great cause.  Watching our students interact together and support each other with their acts shows once again that our students are truly a class act.

Our top winners are as follows:

1st place: Sara Ruth

“O Mio Babbino Caro” – from Gianni Schicchi (Vocal - Solo Opera)

Holiday Drive for Head Start

December 22, 2016.

Our big project for December was our Holiday Drive for Head Start in Ocean City where we “adopted” 18 local students. Key Club Officers and Class Representatives each had a group of 8-10 general members and a total of 9 groups; each group was given one girl and one boy from Head Start, ages 4-5.. The Key Clubbers gave their own funds and time to go shopping for toys and clothing for their families. Various items included a bike, jackets, Melissa and Doug products, Doc McStuffins items, and different art manipulatives. Officers brought the gifts to Head Start and were able to meet all of the children, as well as some of the parents when they were picking up their child. The parents and children were genuinely thankful for making their Christmas even brighter.

PB&J Drive with OCIS PB&J Club

December 16, 2016.

We also had a lot of support from parents, Intermediate School teachers, and the High School Food Service Department.  Key Clubbers mixed with the Intermediate Schools students to share ideas about Key Club, as well as hear what is going on at the Intermediate School.

On Saturday, October 25th, Key Club students volunteered at the 29th annual Beach Sweep, with more than 3,000 volunteers at 72 beach sites from Cape May to Sandy Hook, as well as in watersheds throughout the state.   The students started at the Music Pier in Ocean City and combed the beach for several hours to help rid the area of trash.  Some of the items collected were plastic pieces, plastic shopping bags, cigarette filters, plastic caps and lids, and plastic straws.
